In its bid to provide much-needed succour to consumers harassed by recovery agents, Delhi Police has set up a separate wing to tackle the menace. Starting from 20-Dec-2008, a special helpline – with two numbers, 1090 and 26184455 – will be operational where consumers can lodge complaints against recovery agents hired by banks and mobile phone companies. The wing will work under the Anti-Extortion Cell of the Crime Branch.
Said Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat : “Delhi Police has been receiving complaints from many consumers, alleging that they were threatened with dire consequences if the payment were not made. That’s why we have started the help line.”
The police will first verify cases and will take action against the official who hire these recovery agents to extort money from people.
This move has come as a relief for some lone defaulters who have faced physical threats in past. Said Rahul Sharma, who approached a consumer court for the harassment he faced from recovery agents of private bank: “I used to get threatening calls late at night and early morning. In the bargain I lost my reputation in front of colleagues. This helpline will help those who are unnecessarily harassed for a few instalments.
